Angola House Fire

A three-story West Pleasant Street home is leveled by a fire in Angola. Firefighters arrived to find the residence fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews battled the blaze for nearly an hour…the home eventually collapsed on itself. It is not known how it started. There were no occupants…it was undergoing renovations at the time. The loss is estimated at $130,000. No injuries reported.

Area Officials In Washington

Williams County Commissioner, Brian Davis joined more than 80 Ohio County Commissioners and County Council members who accepted an invitation from the White House for a conference. The goal of the event was to develop a working relationship between the White House and Ohio’s County Leaders. Ohio is the fourth State that has received an invitation by the Trump administration to meet with all departments within the Federal Government.

DC Humane Society Under Investigation

Defiance County authorities are investigating the finances of the Fort Defiance Humane Society…they operate the Coressel Animal Shelter on Ohio 15, northwest of Defiance. It has been closed since the investigation began this week. The shelter is still accepting dogs that need care. The humane society has come under criticism in recent years for its operating procedures.

Toledo Girl OK After Shooting

A Toledo man is charged with child endangerment after his three-year-old daughter got a hold of his gun and shot herself. Police say William Oliver left his gun on his bed where this daughter found it and shot herself in the hand at a home on Applegate in west Toledo. The child is expected to be okay. Oliver was arrested but is out on bond. He is due back in court in September.

Standoff Leads To Explosion

Multiple units respond to a large structure fire in Swan Creek Township, following a domestic dispute and standoff with officers. Deputies arrived at a home on US-20, they removed a woman and two children from the area soon after they arrived. The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home. Deputies attempted to enter, but smelled gasoline inside and retreated. Afterward, deputies unsuccessfully tried to negotiate with the suspect. Soon, an explosion rocks the building and the surrounding area, leaving nearby buildings shaking.

Deputies Looking For A Speeder

Williams County deputies want to know more about a white Chevrolet Tahoe spotted Monday evening on County Road M, near County Road 22, north of West Unity near the Ohio Turnpike. The driver fled from deputies as they attempted to pull him over for speeding. Anyone with information is asked to call the Williams County Sheriff’s Office.

Lightning Fires Abound

Several fires in the area are being blamed on lightning. The Southwest Fire District assisted Aboite Township crews fighting three fires within 40 minutes. One blaze was reported at a home inside the Chestnut Hills neighborhood…it sustained minor damage. Then, a barn caught fire on Bass Road. With 7,000 bales of hay inside, the barn suffered heavy damage…a firefighter suffered a leg injury. Then, minutes after that, a fire was reported at a home off Illinois Road. It sustained minor damage. The National Weather Service reported 378 lightning strikes in the area.

NH Power Outage

Three New Haven schools lost power Tuesday morning…the district allowed parents to pick up students. 3,300 customers were without electricity in and the city. The outage was caused by a squirrel, not the weather.

Defiance School Raises

Defiance school officials will see around 3 percent increases in pay. The city Board of Education made it official this week.

General Election Shaping Up

20 write-in candidates, many in Defiance and Fulton counties have stepped forward for the November general election. Joshua Mast, who withdrew as a Defiance City Council at-large candidate, has filed as a write-in for the unexpired two-year term for the city’s Ward 3 seat. The seat opened earlier this year when Jake Oberlin stepped down.
