The Defiance County Commissioners have joined the cries of dissent to the AquaBounty facility proposed for Pioneer. AquaBounty is planning to build a facility in Pioneer capable of producing 10,000 metric tons of genetically modified salmon. It has garnered concerns from many people in the community with many people taking issue with the proposed withdrawal of up to 5.25 million gallons a day of water from the local aquifer. The project includes dumping about that much back into the St. Joseph River. The Defiance County Commissioners signed a letter to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency dated Sept. 8 expressing their non-support for aquifer drilling in general, but included AquaBounty specifically. The letter states the aquifer, is the primary source of drinking water for Defiance County.
