The Montpelier Village Council approves selling nearly $100,000 dollars’ worth of renewable energy credits…in a way that will hopefully benefit citizens. RECs are issued when one megawatt-hour of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy resource. Village Manager, Jason Rockey said they earned RECs through the solar field, which resulted in $98 thousand dollars in income for the electric utility in 2023. Council approved a resolution under suspension of the rules to apply that money to the monthly power supply cost adjustment, which could result in a credit to ratepayers. If put toward the cost of electric generation, Rockey said, then ratepayers wouldn’t notice any changes, as it costs the village $400,000 dollars or more for electricity.
